The word 'Ouri' comes from the Korean language, meaning 'us', 'our', or 'ours'. As a Korean-Canadian, I wanted to incorporate my heritage into my brand, and 'Ouri' seemed like the perfect fit. ‘Ouri’ is a word that convey a sense of closeness and endearment, something that I believe is important in the relationship between a person and their jewelry. Ouri’s first collection was a grad exhibition, called 'Neurodivergence and Sensitivities as Identities', which was inspired by my desire to raise awareness about HSP, a condition that falls under the neurodivergence spectrum. The collection consisted of five senses (touch, smell, sight, hearing, and taste) I designed and made into five pieces of jewelry. Through the medium of jewelry, I wanted to create representations of ourselves with symbolic pieces of jewelry, and help reconstruct the social stigma around sensitivities and encourage people to embrace their unique identities.
